Hi! My name is Dawn. I am 31 years old and pregnant with my second child. We have a two year old little girl, and are expecting a little boy in the next two months. I teach sixth grade science part time. I am currently working on my doctorate. I feel like my plate is full! In my free time (!) I enjoy reading and scrapbooking. I live in the country and have three dogs, two cats, and five fish.
I found a picture of healthy foods and vitamins as a metaphor for how I uniquely care for my health and well-being as well as that of my family. I try to follow the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and my hubby follows a modified Paleo diet. We take vitamins that are specific for our personal needs. We take vitamins every single day. Our daughter also takes age appropriate vitamins as well.

I am 30 weeks pregnant and have been struggling with varicose veins. I am having to wear thigh high compression hose. I have had a doppler study to check for clots. As a result I am taking a specific vitamin regimen to help with the veins. I drink lots of water as well as make sure I eat (or drink) ample amounts of fruits and vegetables to keep my digestive system functioning properly in an effort to prevent the movement of varicose veins. I choose to do these things for two reasons: 1) the varicose veins hurt and 2) they are ugly. I am unsure of if they are working or how I would feel without them because I do not want to stop and experiment to find out.
I was a little overwhelmed with taking pictures of the products I take every day so I took a picture of all of my products where I store them in the bathroom as well as the bowl I prepare for myself each day. I begin my day with taking 3 Armour thyroid pills. 30 mg each. I took more before I was pregnant and there was actually a disagreement between my ob/gyn and my holistic dr regarding my remaining on them during pregnancy. My holistic dr won and I am so glad! I take a blend called Stress 30. It includes 7 pills and I am copying and pasting the main ingredients from the website. Main Ingredients Vitamin A (from retinyl palmitate) 4,000 IU

I also do a daily protein shake as well as making sure I eat (or drink) the proper amount of fruits and vegetables each day.
Please comment with any questions or specific information that I have missed including. I was beginning to feel like I was writing a book!
Hi Dawn,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great start to your blog! A few questions come to mind so far:
1. In terms of the supplements you are taking, what specific effects/changes in your health have you noticed by doing so?
2. It sounds like you come at healthy digestion through foods and do not take specific supplements for that? Is this correct?
3. Have you always had this approach to your health? If not, what started you taking these supplements/following this diet etc...?
I am going to respond to the questions in numerical fashion to make sure that I am answering each question as well as making it easier to follow (I hope!).
ReplyDelete1. I have to admit that I have not noticed specific effects/changes in my health by taking the supplements. As I mentioned in the blog, I am nervous to dial back especially in connection with the varicose vein situation. I notice the greatest difference when I do not take a protein shake.
2. At this point I do not take specific supplements for digestion although I do take Beta-Gest when my stomach is feeling queasy, etc.
3. I have taken this approach for the past six years. My husband and I struggled with infertility for five years with our first child. I saw a fertility specialist but it was not until I started going for acupuncture and seeing a holistic doctor that I began to take supplements and following the SCD diet.
Thanks, Dawn!
